Dive Rescue Team
The Dive Rescue Team was founded in 1972 by the late Sheriff John Bliven, and the Late Mr. Robert Clow. Sheriff Bliven was well known as a tenacious and thorough investigator. Bob Clow was an instructor at Western Illinois University, nationally known gymnastics coach, and one of the founding members of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (P.A.D.I.). Together, they saw the need for a specialized group of divers to fulfill the needs of the Law Enforcement Community.
Originally called the Underwater Rescue Team. In those early years, Bob Clow was the team, supplying divers and equipment as the need arose.
At that time, the team was strictly a reaction team, only able to respond after the personnel and equipment had been located.
Today, the Dive Rescue Team is an all volunteer rescue group, under the direction of the McDonough County Sheriff's Department. The team consists of a core group of experienced emergency services people from the Sheriff's Department, Macomb Police Department, Western Illinois University Police, Macomb Fire Department, and other Police, Fire, and Emergency Services.
Other Dive Rescue Team members are from the local community, or are Western Illinois University students. All team members share a common interest in community service, providing emergency services, and enthusiasm for Dive Rescue and underwater recovery work. All team members are volunteers. No one receives any pay for their personal time spent.
The Dive Rescue Team is a non-profit, non tax budgeted organization. The team relies entirely on donations, grants, and contributions from communities, service organizations, groups, and most importantly, concerned individuals.
Originally, the team was strictly a reactive group, only doing underwater recoveries. Today, the Dive Rescue Team is a rescue response group, able to respond and have a diver in the water anywhere in McDonough County, with in 30 minutes.
The Dive Rescue Team is an important education provider in the field of Dive Rescue and water rescue related subjects. The team has given presentations and classes on topics such as: Dive Rescue, Cold Water Near Drowning, Swift Water Rescues, Ice Rescues, Emergency Response to Water Related Accidents, Underwater Recovery, Working with a Dive Team, and other remote area Search and Rescue topics.
The Dive Rescue Team has provided training to over 100 regional Emergency Services, Rescue, Police, Fire Departments, and other First Response organizations.
The Dive Rescue Team is not strictly limited to McDonough County. The team is available to any Law Enforcement or Rescue agency that requests the services of the team. The Dive Rescue Team has performed dives and rescue responses in McDonough, Fulton, Schuyler, Mason, Cass, Brown, Adams, Hancock, Henderson, Mercer, Knox and Warren counties in Illinois, Des Moines and Lee counties in Iowa, as well as dives for the Illinois and Iowa State Police.
If you have any further questions about the McDonough County Sheriff's Office Dive Rescue Team, or would like to have the team give a presentation or instruction to your organization or group, please feel free to contact us at any time.
Senior Citizen Police Academy
The McDonough County Sheriffs Office Senior Citizen Police Academy was implemented in 1996 under then Sheriff Stan Carman. In order to reach out to the community in which we serve a need was seen to work with our senior citizens. The Sheriffs Office recognized that our senior citizens are a viable source of information and essential to our commitment of community policing.
The McDonough County Sheriffs Office Senior Citizen Police Academy is free and open to any area senior citizen. The Academy generally runs for six to eight weeks, meeting once a week for approximately ninety minutes. The Academy itinerary is chosen from our senior citizens who express interest in learning about issues related to their daily concerns. Local, state, federal and private sector experts are then contacted to present a program on the given topic or concern.
One goal of the Academy is to build a bridge between our senior citizens and law enforcement in general. The Academy is geared toward education and information for senior citizens.
At this time an Academy is being planned for mid to late summer. Any person wishing to contact the Sheriffs Office regarding a presentation or program to senior citizens is strongly encouraged to do so.
